Dire Straits – Money for Nothing

Sept 5, 1986

I shoulda learned to play the guitar.  I shoulda learned to play them drums.  Look at that momma… she got it stickin’ in the camera, man…

The album, Brothers in Arms, was released in 1985 and best guess is that this video was released in 1986 since it won MTV’s Video of the Year award on September 5, 1986.  Then in 1987, Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing was the first video to be aired on MTV Europe (August 1, 1987).

[You gotta appreciate how completely politically incorrect this song was and is.  It was even banned in Canada for a while (2010)  due to some of its lyrics.  But hey, it IS “Rock and Roll,” right?]

You might recognize the opening falsetto voice singing “I want my MTV”.  This is actually Sting himself singing that in a similar fashion as it is sung at special times in the song “Don’t Stand So Close to Me”.  Sting did not want to be credited for this particular contribution and some speculate that this was to avoid his record company requesting royalties as it DID sound similar to the song written for The Police.
